According to Bob Ammerman, head librarian, an Otis elevator between floors of the renovated two-level building has arrived and will be installed in the near future, and partitions in the interior of the structure are going up.
Work began in the spring on the $400,000 library project. The library, which will contain approximately 50,000 books in its 14,000 square feet, will have a multipurpose room, storage space and some other facilities in the lower level. The first floor, or upper level, will contain the books, office space, an area for book processing, an employees' lounge and a combination local-history room and board room, as well as a children's library. "THE LIBRARY WILL have a sprin-kler system and also access for the handicapped," Ammerman said. The current library, a Germantown landmark across the street from the new building, was built with funds donated by Andrew Carnegie, the famed steel industrialist, in 1907, "and is very crowded," Ammerman said.
Germantown's first library was started in 1888. Lecklider and Jay of Dayton were the architects, while Brill Construction. Co. of Springfield is doing the construction. The elevator is frotr.
