Start the paragraph with the deceased's first name, and then “is survived by:” followed by the list of names. Appropriate immediate family: wives, husbands, brothers, sisters and parents are customarily listed, but you can add as many names as you think are most appropriate.

An obituary is written to tell the story of your loved one. These will often be in the funeral program. There will even be a part of the funeral where the obituary will be silently read by everyone in attendance at the funeral. It is something you and your family should be patient with when you are writing it.

When writing an obituary, leave out details that could be used for identity theft, such as the deceased's date and place of birth, middle name, maiden name and mother's maiden name. And don't include the deceased's home address.

If the deceased was divorced, it can be worth it to include this information in the obituary, especially if they were close afterwards or had children. The obituary should list the names of the ex-spouses as well as any children from those marriages.

The obituary is typically written by the family (edited, then submitted, by the Funeral Director), so the cause of death is or isn't included by the direction of the family and not the newspaper.

A eulogy is not the time to settle scores or air personal grievances, no matter how relevant they might seem to the speaker. Mentioning past conflicts, disappointments, or the deceased's shortcomings can create discomfort and is considered disrespectful during a time meant for mourning and reflection.

Deciding not to publish an obituary is #perfectlynormal in grief. If publishing an obituary in the paper or online feels (or felt) wrong to you - perhaps drawing unwanted attention or sharing on a level beyond what's comfortable - that's OK. There is no one right way to honor someone you love.

A semi-colon most often will be used in lists of survivors. For example: He is survived by his brother, Charles, and three sisters, Martha Smith, of Phoenix, AZ.; Jane Jones, of Baltimore; and Sally Ward of Boulder, CO.

Also keep in mind any cultural or religious norms regarding the order in which predeceased individuals are listed. In the United States, spouses typically take priority, followed by children, parents, and then siblings.
